  If you're looking for a pub with rustic charm, then The Victoria is the one. Low beamed ceilings and old fireplaces, a good selection of beers, lagers and spirits, and a restaurant that deserves to win awards. One of the best pubs I've been to in the North East of England.

  The Victoria has recently undergone a change of menu as at December 2012. The original menu has been pared down considerable on Mains, although many of the Starter choices remain, if not quite in the same recipe format.
  It's evident that this change in Menu is a financial decision. The steaks are still there, but Steak Night is not 'every night' as previous and is now limited to one night. Similarly, the limited Menu choice has been carefully chosen, and not always for the better.
  For example, we often had the black pudding Starter, which came with scallops and a fresh salad; it now consists of one round of black pudding wrapped in half a streaky rasher of bacon on onion gravy.
  The salmon dish consisted one time of a thick fillet, served on ribbon vegetables, with a sauce containing prawns. It now consists of a much thinner steak, on a small bed of spring greens, one scoop of potato and a smoked garlic tablespoon of sauce. (£9.95) Hubby's sausages were advertised as being 3 different types, but they all looked and tasted exactly the same and I've tasted better in the Fine Range in Supermarkets.
  I haven't yet tried a steak since the Menu change, but I'm guessing that they won't be as big or as good quality based on the dishes we tried. I did note that the sides to the steak are now no longer onion rings and chips and mushrooms as before.
  There also seems to have been a cut down in staff. We waited over half an hour between our Starter and Main as staff rushed to cope with the patrons at the bar and the restaurant.
  It is a nice bar and eatery. In the vernacular of the restaurants name  The Boathouse  it sadly seems to have all been spoiled for a 'happorth of tar
